The most dangerous place in Ghana today, and during this festive season is while you are (in a car) on the road. There will be huge vehicular movements and it will require both pedestrians and drivers to observe the following: Always wear a seatbelt, and ensure other occupants are strapped down. Remember to strap children 0-6yrs in their seat.
Always carry your Driver License or an Identification Card Have directions before you set out. Park as close as you can to your destination and always make a quick survey of your surroundings for any suspicious activities. Never leave your car unoccupied with the engine running or with children inside. Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
Keep a secure hold on your purse, phones, handbags and car keys. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. When approaching and leaving your vehicle be aware of your surroundings. Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area. Be conscious of unusual/suspicious behavior of other drivers on the road as ‘drunk driving’ and other criminal activities are not uncommon during such festive occasions.
Stick to well-travelled roads when possible and take a cell phone and car charger for emergencies Ensure your car is in good condition Keep an emergency kit in your trunk (boot) If you need to use your cell phone, pull over to the side of the road when and where it’s safe to do so Advise someone of your travel route and the times you plan to leave home and arrive at your destination.
